ACROSS Hertfordshire a creative revolution is taking place, and no less so at Digswell’s Forge studios.

Over two weekends in late summer, artists working at the purpose built studios set in stunning countryside close to Welwyn Garden City, will be part of the county wide Open Studios, coordinated by Herts Visual Arts. It promises to be a visual feast, when visitors to The Forge can secure themselves an original piece of work direct from the artist, or simply see what goes on behind the studio doors. The vibrant artists’ community at The Forge produces an eclectic mix of contemporary work, ranging from sculpture, fused glass, original prints produced on the in-house etching press – one of the largest in the country – to innovative textiles, paintings, mixed media 2D works, film and video, photography, drawing and more. All artists at The Forge are emerging creative professionals, some exhibiting on a regular basis, others also working on a range of outreach projects across the county and in nearby London. For a sneak view of work by Forge artists you can also take a look at the artists’ websites by searching Ella Carty, Veronica Grassi, Maxine King, Emily Hannon, Chris Groombridge, Sally Tyrie, Mary Down, Suman Gujral, Gill Ayre, Alex McIntyre, Julia Skrebels, Andy Thomas and Permindar Kaur.

The Forge is one of three studio sites that comprise Digswell Arts Trust, which was set up in 1957 in Digswell to provide affordable studios for professional artists. Past fellows at Digswell Arts Trust include internationally famous ceramicists Hans Coper and Elizabeth Fritsch, and sculptor John W Mills. Outside artists and beginners interested in print techniques will also be able to talk with member printmaker Sally Tyrie who runs popular print workshops and an ‘Open Access’ programme.
